Building Systems

In this module we studied different festivals and the places where they take place, how structural systems play an important role in the buildform of these festivals. Factors like climate change, wind direction, local materials were taken into consideration while designing the intervention. We designed a cafeteria with services and material systems creating a forms understanding the spatial experience it would produce.

The Rann Utsav, a cultural and tourism festival held in the Rann of Kutch, significantly contributes to the local economy. It boosts tourism, leading to increased revenue for the hospitality sector, local artisans, and businesses. The festival showcases the rich cultural heritage of the region, attracting visitors and generating income through accommodations, handicraft sales, and various cultural activities. This influx of tourists during the Rann Utsav plays a pivotal role in stimulating economic activities in the area.

This is the Tent City at Rann Utsav. The tents used for Rann Utsav are often set up as temporary accommodations in the specially created tent city for the duration of the festival. After the festival concludes, these tents are typically dismantled and stored for future use.

Intent :

The road along which the bus stand and the children's park is situated, is a busy road as it goes up to the white desert and there are a few resorts along too.Between the bus stand and the park there is a void which becomes an interesting place to intervene. Also here two roads meet making it an interesting site as a lot of public would pass from here.A small lake is situated behind the bus stand which could be a place to view by creating a vantage at the site.My intent to choose this site was that, this place has a lot of potential due to the proximity to the road and bus stand, it would invite people into the desert landscape and serve as a place for leisure. As it is near the children's play park, an element that blends in the activities for children would create a dynamic / active space.

I am designing a cafe in the desert that becomes the part of the desert landscape.Along with cafe, the two other programmes are stargazing and a photo gallery. Stargazing, because there are no huge structures restricting the view above and a photo gallery, where pictures taken from stargazing will be displayed. While studying my site in Kutch, I came across the traditional houses (Bhunga)made of materials like mud, bambooand thatch. While designing initially I tried to use the typology of the existing structures which restricted me to connect with the existing landscape. Then, I used the movement of sand dunes to create a moving and continuous form which still did not work effectively in terms of construction. Learning about the vault and how it spreads into the landscape of the site, led to creating a vault at the centre which will function as a cafe beneath and a stargazing deck above. In the final design I integrated the existing type with new structural system (vault) in the desert landscape.
