Bada Baazar
We started with mapping the site, that is the street of the Bada Baazar and tried to understand the buildform. Bara Bazar is one such market with a variety of perfume makers. The market sits over a gentle slope with a distinct staggering seen in the elevations of the half a century old buildings.

The street offers a sensorial experience, allows transactions and affordances.
The main street has the ittar/ perfume shops all along and hence, the scent of the perfume drifts along the whole street. The builtform allows the diffused sunlight to enter the street. The street has shops on both sides facing each other, this allows more interactions.
The inner gali has artisans who make wooden boxes for the ittars. These artisans work on the extended plinth of their houses. The type of houses along the street have shops in front and the main house behind it. The last two houses of inner gali had perfumeries attached to them initially.
Mr. Vishwanath Sharma, who has been running his shop since three generations, uses a unique method of making boxes called ‘Tashkashi’ which involves working primarily with sheesham wood, carving the wood and inlaying brass wires in the wood. All the artisans work as a community, sometimes helping each other to complete orders when one may run out of stock.
